WHAT IS A WILL?
A Will is a document which details what should be done with your estate once you have died. The three most important reasons for writing your Will are:
- Your children – if you haven’t made provision for their guardianship upon your death, then the courts will make that decision for you and appoint someone on your behalf.
- Your assets – you decide who inherits what… or more importantly who doesn’t inherit at all!
- Tax efficiency – you can maximise what you leave to your loved ones and not what you give to HMRC

Most of us have a mental ‘to-do’ list of things that we never seem to get round to…. like taking more exercise, eating a bit healthier or writing a Will.
As a wedding or a holiday can prompt improved exercise or a better diet, so the death of a loved one might start us thinking about a writing a Will. Even then, it’s easy to put it off until ‘nearer the time’, but should you die without a Will, the rules of Intestacy will apply.
These are rules which set out who will inherit your estate in the absence of a Will. So whilst we don’t see the benefits of writing a Will ourselves (like we would in those holiday photos!), it really should be at the top of everyone’s ‘to-do’ list.
